At my current body mass of 328 to 336 pounds Bikram’s Hot Yoga burns approximately 2,232 to 2,313 Calories in the 90 minute class!!! That’s roughly 2/3 of a pound! Wow.
This guy has even gone as far as monitoring his body parameters while in the yoga class, that’s a great idea and I’ll have to get that going on too! Here is his story:
“It’s been a year since I practiced Bikram Yoga to supplement my mountain biking and windsurfing. I was looking for a discipline that could help in my core strength, balance and flexibility. …
I consider myself a reasonably fit athlete with a VO2 max of 69 ml/min/kg. In other words, I have good endurance threshold and recover quickly. However, nothing prepared me for how challenging Bikram Yoga would be.
Initially, I could hardly breathe and was panting heavily as I did not regulate my breathing. The 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises practised in a 40º C room in 90 minutes is my toughest physical activity – period. I feel totally spent after every session.
Here’s a map [above] of the poses to my heart rate, total calories burned [for my body mass] is 550 calories.” – Journey Adventure Balance on Bikram Yoga
One of my family medical doctors told me to do whatever I had to do to burn one pound at day (maximum medical safe limit according to him).
Certainly Bikram’s Hot Yoga facilitates a huge calorie burn the bigger your body is.
At 180 pounds the estimate of calories burned is 1,225 calories in 90 minutes.
